Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Q: Is LegitGuard free?
A: Yes, LegitGuard is free to use.
Q: Does LegitGuard work offline?
A: Yes! All analysis happens on your device, so LegitGuard works completely offline.
Q: Will LegitGuard slow down my browsing?
A: No. LegitGuard only analyzes when you click the extension icon. It doesn't run automatically in the background.
Q: Does LegitGuard work with other browsers?
A: Currently, LegitGuard is only available for Safari on macOS. Support for other browsers may be added in the future.
Q: What macOS version do I need?
A: LegitGuard requires macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later.
How It Works
Q: How does LegitGuard detect dangerous websites?
A: LegitGuard uses pattern-based algorithms to analyze domain names, URLs, and website characteristics. It checks for suspicious patterns like typosquatting, suspicious TLDs, phishing keywords, and more.
Q: Is LegitGuard 100% accurate?
A: No security tool is 100% accurate. LegitGuard uses heuristics and pattern detection, which means it may occasionally flag legitimate sites as suspicious (false positives) or miss some sophisticated attacks (false negatives). Always use your judgment.
Q: Why does a legitimate website show as suspicious?
A: LegitGuard uses pattern-based detection, which may flag legitimate sites that happen to match suspicious patterns (e.g., using a less common TLD, having certain keywords). If you believe a site is incorrectly flagged, please report it.
Q: Can I trust a "Looks Safe" result?
A: A "Looks Safe" result means the site doesn't match known suspicious patterns, but you should still exercise caution, especially when entering personal information or making payments.
Privacy Questions
Q: Does LegitGuard collect my browsing data?
A: No. LegitGuard does not collect, store, or transmit any browsing data. All analysis happens locally on your device.
Q: Does LegitGuard send URLs to external servers?
A: No. LegitGuard never sends any data to external servers. All analysis is performed on your device.
Q: Does LegitGuard use tracking or analytics?
A: No. LegitGuard does not use any tracking or analytics tools.
Q: What permissions does LegitGuard need?
A: LegitGuard requires access to the current tab's URL to perform analysis. This is the minimum permission needed for the extension to function.
